A worn clutch is one of the repairs that can catch manual-car owners off guard, and the quotes you receive can differ a lot. This guide pulls together published clutch replacement prices from named Australian sources, shows the date and basis of each figure, explains what pushes a quote up or down and lists what to ask a workshop. It is general information. Car Buyers Assist is an independent buying guide and does not sell, fit or repair clutches, so use the figures to judge a quote, not as a quote. If you are comparing the running costs of a car you are about to buy, see our buy a car guide.

Short answer: how much does a clutch replacement cost?
The sources we reviewed put a full clutch replacement on a typical passenger vehicle at roughly $1,000 to $2,000, with cheaper repairs such as a cable or hydraulic fix costing less and larger vehicles or extra parts costing more. The ranges below come from different sources, dates and kinds of job, which is why we show each one rather than a single average.
Published clutch costs, by source
| Job | Published range | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|
| Full clutch replacement | $1,100 to $2,000 | Oneflare cost guide (cost data based on Oneflare and third-party sources; no date shown) |
| Clutch kit installation, smaller vehicle | $500 to $1,200 | Oneflare cost guide (no date shown) |
| Clutch kit installation, larger vehicle | $800 to $2,000 | Oneflare cost guide (no date shown) |
| Clutch cable replacement | $125 to $700 | Oneflare cost guide (no date shown) |
| Master and slave cylinder replacement | $350 to $500 | Oneflare cost guide (no date shown) |
| Full clutch jobs on Brisbane Bayside tasks | Mostly about $750 to $1,200 | Airtasker: budgets posted by customers (not confirmed prices) on tasks from January 2024 to June 2026; page updated 25 September 2026 |
The Airtasker figures are what people said they would pay, so treat them as a guide to what customers expect rather than what workshops charged. Oneflare also reports average costs of $1,100 in Melbourne and $900 in Perth from its data, and says labour rates vary by location while part prices are roughly the same everywhere.
Extra items that can add to a clutch quote
The Quote Yard, a trade quoting site, publishes 2026 South Australian estimates (18 June 2026). It lists inspection or diagnosis at $150 to $400, a flywheel machining or replacement as an added cost of $800 to $3,000, and labour at $130 to $190 an hour. Its full-replacement figures are for rigid trucks and prime movers, so we have not used them for cars. The flywheel line matters because a quote that leaves it out can grow once the gearbox is out.
What changes the price
- Vehicle make, model and year. Larger vehicles and luxury vehicles tend to cost more, and some designs, such as dual-mass flywheels, cost more to fix.
- Access. Many jobs need the gearbox removed, which takes longer on some SUVs, utes and 4WDs.
- Parts. Manufacturer, aftermarket, rebuilt or heavy-duty parts are priced differently.
- Scope. A cable, a hydraulic fault, a clutch kit, a flywheel and a rear main seal are different jobs.
- Labour rates and location. Rates differ between workshops and states.
- Diagnosis. Sources note some faults are not obvious until the vehicle is inspected.
Signs a clutch may be wearing out
Common signs mechanics describe include a clutch that slips under load, a pedal that feels spongy, sticks or does not return, a burning smell, difficulty selecting gears and a change in where the pedal bites. These can have different causes, some cheaper than a full replacement, so get a diagnosis before you agree to the work.
What to ask before you approve the work
- Is the quote for parts and labour, and does it include GST?
- What is being replaced: the clutch kit only, or also the flywheel, release bearing and hydraulics?
- What happens if the flywheel needs machining or replacing once the gearbox is out?
- What brand and grade of parts will be used?
- What warranty is offered on parts and labour?
- Can I have the old parts back and a written quote before work starts?
Buying a car with a manual gearbox
If you are buying a used manual, a clutch near the end of its life is a real cost to allow for. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a clutch in Australia?
Published sources we reviewed give about $1,100 to $2,000 for a full clutch replacement on a typical vehicle, with smaller repairs costing less. Your quote depends on the vehicle, parts and workshop.
Why do clutch quotes vary so much?
The job can range from a cable adjustment to a full kit, flywheel and hydraulics. Vehicle type, parts and labour rates also differ, so ask what each quote includes.
How long does a clutch last?
It depends on the vehicle and how it is driven. Oneflare notes clutches near 200,000 km, and those used in frequent stop-and-go driving, tend to wear out sooner.
Is the flywheel included in a clutch replacement?
Not always. A flywheel may need machining or replacing, which can add to the cost, so ask whether it is included or what happens if it is needed.
Can I drive with a slipping clutch?
A slipping clutch usually gets worse and can leave the car unable to move. Have it diagnosed by a mechanic rather than waiting.
Does Car Buyers Assist replace clutches?
No. This is an independent cost guide. Please get written quotes from workshops near you.
