Wheel Alignment Cost in Australia: Published Price Examples and What to Ask

A wheel alignment is one of those jobs that sounds minor until you get a quote. Prices vary by vehicle, workshop and what the technician finds, and published figures do not always agree with each other. This guide explains what an alignment is, how it differs from wheel balancing, the signs that suggest you may need one, what published price examples show (with the source and date for each) and what to ask the workshop before you agree. Car Buyers Assist does not provide wheel alignments; this is a neutral guide to help you budget and ask better questions.

Short answer: how much does a wheel alignment cost?

Published examples sit in a broad range rather than at one figure, and we have not calculated a national average because the sources are not comparable. The examples below range from about $50 to about $250 depending on the source and vehicle size. Treat them as a guide for budgeting, then get a written quote for your car.

These are guides from price-comparison and directory sites, not quotes from a particular workshop, and they will date. Where a source has no visible date we have said so. If you want to see how an alignment fits alongside other running costs, our guides to car service cost, car battery replacement cost and windscreen replacement cost use the same approach.

What is a wheel alignment?

Bridgestone explains that an alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so they sit correctly relative to the car and the road. The angles it describes include caster, camber, toe, thrust and ride height. The aim is for the car to track straight and for the tyres to wear evenly. It is a suspension and steering adjustment, not a tyre service.

Wheel alignment versus wheel balancing

Wheel alignmentWheel balancing
What it addressesThe angles of the wheels relative to the carUneven weight distribution around the wheel and tyre
Typical symptomPulling to one side, off-centre steering wheel, uneven tyre wearVibration, often at certain speeds
Separate service?YesYes

Bridgestone describes balancing as a separate service that counters weight imbalance and reduces vibration. Yellow Pages also lists balancing separately, with prices starting from about $50. Ask whether a quote includes one, the other or both.

Signs you may need an alignment

  • The car drifts or pulls to one side on a flat, straight road.
  • The steering wheel sits off-centre when you are driving straight.
  • Tyres wear unevenly, for example more on one edge.
  • You have recently replaced tyres or suspension parts, or hit a pothole or kerb hard.

Bridgestone suggests having an alignment checked about every two to three years or 10,000 kilometres. Your owner’s manual and a trusted workshop are the better guide for your car. Vibration alone is more often a balancing question than an alignment one.

What affects the price

  • Vehicle size and type. The sources above show larger vehicles, 4WDs and SUVs costing the same or more than small cars.
  • Two-wheel or four-wheel. mycar notes both options. Bridgestone says a front alignment takes about 30 minutes, while a four-wheel alignment on a complex suspension can take an hour or more, which affects labour.
  • Workshop labour rates. Airtasker shows mechanic labour of about $30 to $100 per hour, so rates differ widely.
  • Worn parts. If suspension or steering components are worn or damaged, they may need repair before an alignment can hold, which is a separate cost.

Questions to ask the workshop

  • Is this a two-wheel or four-wheel alignment, and does the quote cover my vehicle type?
  • Does the price include a before-and-after printout of the measurements?
  • Is wheel balancing included, or is it extra?
  • If worn parts stop the car being aligned, what happens to the price?
  • Is there a warranty or recheck period if the car still pulls?
  • Can I have the quote in writing before work starts?

FAQ

Is a wheel alignment the same as wheel balancing?

No. Alignment adjusts the wheel angles; balancing corrects weight distribution in the wheel and tyre. They are separate services, and Bridgestone describes balancing as the one that reduces vibration.

How often should I get an alignment?

Bridgestone suggests about every two to three years or 10,000 kilometres. Check your owner’s manual and have it looked at sooner if the car pulls or tyres wear unevenly.

How long does an alignment take?

Bridgestone says a front alignment takes about 30 minutes, while a four-wheel alignment on a complex suspension can take an hour or more.

Why do published prices differ so much?

Sources measure different things, use different vehicle groupings and were published at different times. That is why we show each figure with its source rather than one average.

Does Car Buyers Assist do wheel alignments?

No. This is an independent cost guide. Please get quotes from workshops near you.
